Review: Nintendo FAMICOM MUSIC (music CD)

nintendo_famicom_music_cd_01

I can’t remember last time I bought an audio CD. But it’s years ago. When I found out that Nintendo was releasing the Nintendo FAMICOM MUSIC CD, I had to get it. It’s only been released in Japan (December 2013), so I imported it from Play-Asia.com [affiliate link].

The disc set is divided between music from the Famicom (aka NES in the West) and the Famicom Disc System. It’s classic tunes straight from the game roms. Pure 8-bit music.

With the exception of the Famicom Disc System (track 1 on CD 2), each track/game have it’s own sub-tracklist. So when you start Super Mario Bros. you will hear the classic Mario-tune following music from the other levels. I’m getting very nostalgic, especially with the Super Mario Bros. 3 tunes. It’s like I’m playing the game all over again. For a complete tracklist, check the bottom of this post.

Most of the music is from Nintendo’s earlier games in the period 1983-86 with Dr. Mario from 1990 as the newest game. A total of  26 games are covered.

Also did a video review of the CD.

I love the cover art too. The frontcover is a stylized version of the Japanese Famicom in red, white and gold. While the back is a picture of the controller. The art on the CD themselves is also cool. Disc 1 have a picture of the Famicom from a top view, and disc 2 is showing the Famicom Disc System from the front. The inlay in the back have screenshots of titlescreens from some of the games included in the music collection.

The booklet is very nice and I wish I could read Japanese. Each track have a description of the game, I guess (since I don’t read Japanese), a sub-tracklist, release date for the game and the coverart. It’s very well done.

The music in this collection brings back memories from the good old 8-bit days. In a digial age where you stream everything, sometimes is great to have a physical product. If you are a collector or retro fan, the Nintendo FAMICOM MUSIC is for you.

Review: NES Remix (Nintendo Wii U)

Out of nothing, in a Nintendo Direct just before Chrismas, they annonced NES Remix and the game was available for download right afterwards.

If you played Wario Ware, you get the idea of NES Remix. You got 200 challenges from a collection of 16 old NES games, including remixes. It’s Donkey Kong, Excitebike, Mario Bros., Balloon Fight and Super Mario Bros. among others.

A challenge can be like collecting all the coins, kill an enemy, get a fruit… you get the idea. And there is a timelimit too. Some of the stages have only one challenge, while most of them have three to four.

Depending on how well you perform, you earn stars and will unlock new stages in Remix and new stamps which can be used in Miiverse messages.

NES Remix is very well integrated into Miiverse. At every stage you will see a ‘speechboble‘ with comments on that level and their clear time. Though I miss a highscore/best time list for the stages.

I’m having a blast playing NES Remix. The game also have good replay value.

Digging up the old Sega Master System

My sister and I found our old Sega Master System during the Christmas holiday. The controller had some wear and tear, but fully usable and we found some cables to connect it to the TV.

We’ve played Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Sonic the Hedgehog and Castle of Illusion among others. All good games. And we even remember some of the secrets.

Have you been playing some old games lately?

Retrocast #01: Tetris (Game Boy)

This is the first edition of Frank’s Retrocast. I take a quick look at Tetris on Nintendo Game Boy. The game was released in 1989 (thou I say 1988 in the video).

I’ve probably have a lot to improve in this kind of videos, any good suggestion is welcome.

Review: Space Harrier 3-D (Master System/SegaScope 3D)

space_harrier_3d_master_system_04 space_harrier_3d_master_system_05

Space Harrier was released in the arcades in 1985 and on the Master System a year later. And in 1988, Sega released a 3D version of the game on Master System which is actually a sequal to the original and not a remake.

Space Harrier 3-D on the Sega Master System is one of the 8 games Sega made for the SegaScope 3-D/Sega 3D glasses.

The Land of the Dragon is ruled by a corruped tyran and it’s your job as the Space Harrier to find the missing heir of the throne, Euria. There are 13 stages in the game.

Your character can either run on the ground or fly in the air. You shoot by pressing either the 1- or 2-button.

The graphics in the game are good, or as good an 8-bit 3D shooter can be. The object on the ground might look like stickers on a board coming at you, but was probably the only way to scale the object back in ’88. Sega re-used the sample “Get ready” from the 1986-game.

The use of SegaScope 3-D gives the game a good depth. And I’m impressed that it works so well on an 8-bit console. If you don’t have the 3D-glasses, you will see a double-blury image.

All in all, a good game, though I think it’s a bit hard (probably need to play it some more).
