I bought Mario Paint here the other day with the mouse. I plugged the mouse into the Retron 5 console and it worked. You could even use the Super Nintendo mouse on the Retron 5 homescreen. Cool! Check out the video below.

My Retron 5 has arrived

retron5_preview_01

Back in February I pre-ordered the black Retron 5 on Amazon.com. That was a mistakes in two ways. One, I realy like black consoles, phones etc. But the do collect dust heavily. Forgot that! The second, was that at release of the console (after much delay), Amazon only got the grey ones. No black consoles.

I checked Hyperkins Facebook-page for updates frequenlty for news. So here the other day, some one said that Amazon had the grey Retron 5 for sale, and some had switched from black to grey. Quick as I was, I talked to Amazon if I good switch to grey and still keep my pre-order price at $99 and not the new price, $139. I could (after and extra mail to them).

That was on Monday night, June 16. The day after my Retron 5 shipped from Amazon in Phoenix, USA and arrived two days later on Thursday June 19 in Oslo, Norway.

I’ve tested it today with games both Genesis/Mega Drive games, SNES, NES, Gameboy, GBA and Famicom games. So far, so good. Will be playing as much as I can, and will make a review of it when I get time, hopefully soon.

Have you tested or bought the Retron 5? What’s your experience?

Brain Training first DS game on Wii U Virtual Console

Brain Age

Wayback in January, Nintendo announced that they would release Nintendo DS games on the Virtual Console on Nintendo Wii U.

Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? (also known as Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!) is the first game out and was released on the Wii U Virtual Console on June 12, 2014 in Europe and on June 3 in Japan. The game is free to download until July 10, 2014 (in Europe and June 30 in Japan).

Brain Age was originale released on the Nintendo DS in 2005 in Japan and the year after in the rest of the world. This was one of the first game I bought for my Nintendo DS.

Brain Age presents quick mental activities that help keep your DS brain in shape. Activities include quickly solving simple math problems, counting people going in and out of a house simultaneously, drawing pictures on the Touch Screen, reading classic literature out loud, and more. You can also play sudoku, the number puzzle game which has become an extremely popular feature in U.S. newspapers.

It’s a fun game, it’s free, so you should download it right now!

Mario Maker lets you make you own Mario levels

mario_maker_youtube_screenshot2At the Nintendo Digital Event at E3 2014, Nintendo announced Mario Maker.

Appart from what was shown in the Mario Maker trailer, we know not much about the game. But it will let you create levels in the good old NES 8-bit Super Mario Bros.-style. And i looks very fun. You can also change it to the look of New Super Mario Bros. U-style on the fly.

But I hope and quess that the levels can be uploaded for others to download. It looks very promissing.

Mario Maker will be out on Nintendo Wii U in 2015.

Preview: Retron 5

retro-expo_sandefjord2014_34

There have been much talk about the new multi-console from Hyperkin. But after much delay, the Retron 5 will be released in USA early June.

I had a chance to test the console at retro gaming expo in Sandefjord, Norway this weekend. This small preview is based only on 10-15 minuttes gaming I had with the console.retro-expo_sandefjord2014_35

I tried three different games: Sonic the Hedgehog on Sega Mega Drive (Genesis), Mario Kart on SNES and F-Zero on Gameboy Advance.

I have to say that the games look great on the HD screen. The graphics looks very crisp. You can apply different filters to screen. I saw someone had change the filters, but on the games I played, I prefered no-filter. It’s creat to have this options since some games will benefit from filter.

The controller had the right size, but I would prefered more rounded egdes, like the SNES-controller. Luckily, you can use them too on the console, and the NES and Mega Drive controllers. The representative I talked to said that the Retron 5 worked better with extensioncords for the controllers than the originals consoles.retro-expo_sandefjord2014_33

From what I experienced, there was no lag between the controller and the screen. Which is good. Personaly, I would have prefered a normal D-pad, like on the NES, over the one used in the controller. It would have been more precise.

10 to 15 minutes is not much to base a preview of, but I have to say that the Retron 5 do impress me. For those of you who does not know, the Retron 5 support NES, SNES, Super Famicom, Genesis, Mega Drive, Famicom, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Gameboy Advance and with an adapter, Sega Master System. I’ve tested games from three of the systems, and it played very well.

People have waited very long for the Retron 5, but it should be out in the US on June 6. Europe have to wait until the fall.

I have wanted the Retron 5 for a while, but after testing it myself, I want it even more!
